The options have been designed to engage our young people to develop a broader range of skills and develop a wider set of interests. Student voice has helped shape this offer. The scheme aims to boost confidence, increase engagement and improve motivation, helping learners of all abilities to make progress on their lifelong learning journey. We believe our Enrichment element of the curriculum is an opportunity for students to engage positively in learning and experience opportunities that they have chosen & shaped themselves. It helps develop relational practice across the school with their peers and trusted adults. The Enrichment element of the curriculum underpins the ‘Development of Me’ strand that runs through the school and feeds into the bigger picture of developing each individual student and their future independence.

We use an internal development scale which is a unique framework which provides a system to identify, monitor and support children’s emotional and social development, setting goals and targets that fall outside of the academic curriculum.

The ‘Development of Me’ framework is underpinned by a theoretical base in child developmental theory, principally developed for pupils who have significant barriers to education. Many Castle pupils have special educational needs and/or disabilities have education, Educational Health and Care Plans. Some pupils have received in-patient hospital treatment for their additional needs. Pupils typically join the school at any point during the academic year and had mixed experience of prior educational settings.

The Development of me scale allows Castle School to identify underlying unmet needs for students who may be struggling with a range of social, emotional and behavioural needs. We can then use our Development of Me offer which runs through every aspect of school life to provide opportunities to develop and work towards their own social and emotional goals. One way to do this is through our broad and varied enrichment offer.
